It’s difficult to follow your dream. It’s a tragedy not to. ~Oprah.
There is no reason good enough to do things you hate.
There is no reason for you to be doing anything that you hate. No reason good enough, no explanation worthy enough that you will want to hear after the sun has set on your youth, your beauty, and your opportunities as to why you continued doing things you hated day in and day out. Some say it’s easier said than done to learn how to stop doing things you hate, but I say it’s easier to learn to do it than to live a life of regret and false security.
No. Reason. At. All.
Excuses? Yes, plenty. It is easier to make up excuses than it is to take in a deep breath.
A real reason? No, not really.
Gary Vaynerchuck might have as well just spilled his guts on stage when he delivered this message on his unforgettable Ted Talk of all: Do what you love, no excuses.
Every cell in his body vibrates with this message. Every part of his being, every bone, every muscle, resonates, believes and takes action on this one thought. He holds a conviction that you must do what you love. Big fat period.
You may think Gary just an exception but those thoughts only rob you of the same reality you could create for yourself. His actions are a direct result of a conviction that gives him the intensity, the audacity, and the courage to not stop at anything until he does what he himself loves every single day.
Gary doesn’t believe in doing what you hate. Neither do I. What about you?
10 Ways to Stop Doing Things You Hate Right Now
Let’s find out. Either you can stop doing things you hate or you realize that you must not hate it all that much.
- ~ If you hate picking up after your dog all that much, then find someone else to do it or find a better home for the pooch.
- ~ If you hate your job all that much, find another job, start your own business or decide to love your job.
- ~ If you hate your job all that much and don’t believe there is anything else out there for you, change your thoughts.
- ~ If you hate your bills all that much, modify your lifestyle so you have less bills you hate.
- ~ If you hate childcare expenses all that much, find other arrangements for your little darlings and think twice before having more children.
- ~ If you hate working for someone else all that much, then break the chains and go work for yourself.
- ~ If you hate your friends’ attitude all that much, find other friends, choose solitude, or surround yourself with better people.
- ~ If you hate your weight, change it. If you hate your body, take care of it until you love it. If you hate your routine, shake it up.
- ~ If you hate living in your house, move or paint those walls and fall in love. If you hate being married, separate, divorce or figure things out.
- ~ If you hate your life, transform it and get a new life.
Are you screaming at me for over-simplification? I know, but I insist that life can be simple. The big stuff of life is not complicated. It’s our thoughts that makes it so. Very few of us may have seriously prohibitive issues but even then, where there is a will, there is a way.
Trust me, or come talk to me if you insist on disagreeing.
The simple truth comes down to honesty and accountability: You brought yourself in this position and you can without a shadow of a doubt take yourself out of it. This one simple thought is all the conviction you need to move ahead and move in the right direction in your life.
So yes, stop doing what you hate.
Inner Peace is a Fine Reason to Do What You Love
Are you doing what you love with your life?
Or do you think this a silly question for dreamers and care-free people in the world rather than for someone as serious as you, someone in your high position of leadership and authority and responsibility?
If you said yes to the latter, you are missing the mark on living a rich and happy life altogether. I know this because I took myself way too seriously, all at the expense of peace of mind.
Doing what you love is the only way to feel true satisfaction, fulfillment and inner peace, and without inner peace, you have nothing. Much as I enjoy wealth, comfort and security, I’d never give up inner peace again for anything and it takes doing without it to know the essence of it!
What Does Luck Have to Do With It?
I meet people who tell me I am lucky to have been able to quit my job. Lucky. Ha!
Was it luck that brought me to this position of comfort and security when my family moved to this country with nothing but two small suitcases and a willingness to survive? Was it luck that got me my scholarships to electrical engineering school? Was it luck that taught me to live below my means so that I can save for my future instead of super sizing my life like my co-workers?
Was it luck that showed me how to cultivate smart habits so that I can live on my terms? Was it luck that made me break free of a position I had worked all my life to be in only to realize I was disillusioned about everything?
Well, then, if so, I am the luckiest person in the world.
Or, on a radical note, maybe you create your own luck, with self-discipline, and planning and patience. Maybe, you crush your fears, and still feel terrified of an unknown future, but decide you still prefer it to the pain and emptiness of doing that which you cannot stand. Maybe you work up the courage when everyone else around complains and continues to do meaningless nonsense with their life and say:
“ENOUGH already! I am meant to do something remarkable, and nothing is going to stop me because I am going to create my own luck in this world.”
Are you serious about your goals and your dreams or do you view them more as a “would be nice but really too much work to justify the worth right now” kinda thing? Either it pains you, aches you, and drives you a little too crazy to imagine your future without your dreams or you are fine with any outcome.
Which is it?
Because the answer will determine how long you continue doing what you hate.
Your choices become your reality. So choose a good reality.
Either you choose to bet on yourself, yes bet on yourself, or you don’t believe in yourself all that much. Either you are willing to go for it and fail 47 times before getting up to succeed or you are resigned to a life of not achieving what you want because it is far too late since you are no longer 23 years old. Either you think like a loser or like a winner.
The difference between those choices will create your reality. The economy, the state of the world, the stock market don’t determine your future. Your parents, your teachers, your children, and not even your soul mate will decide whether your path will be filled with bliss or blah. You do. You, yourself and you! (But don’t worry, when you live life on your terms, do what you love, and stop making excuses, you will attract everyone like bees to a spring flower!)
So much is possible, feasible, actionable and achievable in this life but you must have the conviction that you will thrive and you can do what you love. There are far too many stories that can inspire you about ordinary people reaching extraordinary heights in their lives.
There are people right now, in this instant, doing great things, creating remarkable ways to change the world for the better, with far less opportunity than you, far more hardship than you can imagine, and no more talent or innate ability than you. How are they doing it? What kind of conviction are they embracing? And why can you not be one of them?
It starts with this: Stop doing what you hate and find a way to do that which you love. Will you do that?
