Entrepreneurship with a Mindset for Massive Wealth

The pursuit of massive wealth can be a wonderful thing, but it is the most beautiful of all when pursued with meaningful work on your own terms.

A little over six months ago, I embraced uncertainty like a long-lost friend and walked out of my corporate “career” of some 12 odd years because I could not rest if I betrayed my calling one more minute. I haven’t looked back once, the grass is much greener on this side and I work countless hours with determination and oh so much delight. Nothing like being your own boss and the master of your own destiny. Trust me and everyone else who says that to you.

I’ve said this before. A lot. In fact, I was almost ready to shut up about this significant turning point in my life except that I had yet one more realization about the business of working for yourself, and that I must share because every story, including that of entrepreneurship, deserves the full picture.

I was convinced for the longest time that in order to gain this freedom, this pure fulfillment, this independence, this self-sustaining business and life on my terms, I had to give up comfort, certainty and cash, the three Cs, for good. Just great, I thought!

The general notion about working for yourself assumes that you are ready to embrace not just freedom but also frugality. It assumes that you may even have a brush with poverty, until your business does enough to help you make ends meet. It assumes that if you are making a fraction of what your other “day job” brought in, that you should be happy because, oh dear, did you not know that 90% of businesses fail, or whatever that stupid statistic is?

It is stupid because it does not take into account what those business people do after their first business fails so the business may very well fail, yes, but the business person behind it quite possibly succeeded with their second or third attempt. Therefore, it is irrelevant to those who persist and refuse to give up and I fully presume that would be you, my dear reader.

Alas, I used to foolishly believe that it was about a big sacrifice and a move to simpler, plainer life. If I wanted to live out my dream of working for myself without leaning on corporate walls for support, I had to give up the other aspects of my life that I enjoyed.

In my mind, it was an either or.
It was a this or that.
It was choice A or choice B.

Are you looking at your choices that way too?
Are you wondering whether you can sacrifice this to pursue that?
Are you torn between one pursuit and another, with both having unpalatable sacrifices associated with them?

What if you could have it all?
What if you shifted your thinking to enable a this and that mindset?
What if you could work for yourself and create massive wealth in the process?

Real wealth hardly comes out of a corporate job even if you work at it all your life. You may get lucky with stock options, sure, but you have a better chance of getting lucky gambling at the craps tables in Las Vegas. The odds of the first one happening to you, I would say, are far less than the latter, and frankly, I’d rather throw that dice day and night long and inhale smoke in any Las Vegas casino than ever walk into a corporate cubicle, I digress but if you only knew how much I despise smoke!

I hate to tell you this but massive wealth does not come from a corporate job unless you are an executive VP for several years in a row or made partner in a law firm or some such extraneous circumstance. As a regular employee, you get a steady paycheck, a bonus now and again, perks here and there, and you get to create a life of comfort and security, but massive wealth is unlikely on this path.

If that is enough for you, great. It is possible that you may not be interested in the pursuit of massive wealth or even average wealth, and that is brilliantly fine. It most certainly was not enough for me, neither the work, nor the reward.

In fact, my position on wealth has not changed since the age of 16, thanks to Ayn Rand’s indelible imprint in my heart: The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. The pursuit of massive wealth is a beautiful and worthwhile goal. Those who have access to massive wealth are in the best position in this world to do good, massive good indeed, and that is how I see wealth: as an amazing enabler of goodness in this world, as long as it belongs in the right hands.

That charity you are dying to donate to? Wealth can be the answer.
That technology start-up you want to fund? Wealth can empower that.
That children’s school in India that you want to build and nurture? Wealth can enable it.
The systems you want to improve and the people you want to help? Wealth can make it all happen.

The pursuit of massive wealth is entirely possible for each of us so long as we do work that we love, work that we find meaningful and aligned to an inner purpose that you decide can change the way people live, work and play.

The richest, wealthiest men and women in this world pursued what they loved, most starting with hardly anything, and most had to put up with a lot of resistance along the way. We know only of the external resistance that met them but I am willing to bet they had to work through internal resistance to boot.

The pursuit of massive wealth has the best, wildest chance of coming true when aligned to the pursuit of meaningful, passionate work but remember, it is a mindset first and foremost. It is a state of believing before becoming a state of being. It is a dream with a chance before it can become a reality.

Somewhere along the way, I had decided that the pursuit of massive wealth is a dream long since lost – giving up a comfortable job can drive you crazy with nonsense, let me tell you. Don’t allow it! Silence those lies in your head and rebuild a realistic, albeit beautifully ambitious, mindset.

Today, I am at peace once again with the pursuit of massive wealth on my own terms, and this time, I believe in it. I am done with the falsehood, the state of clever self-sabotage, or the resistance that my old mindset created. It is high time to embrace real possibilities rather than shy from our truest potential.
