“Why on earth are you going vegan again?” my husband cried as though he has just heard another of my craziest new ideas yet. “Because I want to!” is usually my first stern reaction. It shows that I am the boss of me while at the same time affording me time to collect my thoughts for a much better answer! I then explained to him that my primary motivation is to become familiar with the delicious world of vegan food. I feel towards vegetables and fruits how a connoisseur feels towards wine. I reap immense pleasure from exploring new vegetables and fruits and he, the resident chef, thinks up fresh ideas for us on how to consume them. This “going vegan” move would be the impetus to explore more uncharted territory in vegetable land. That was my primary reason to turn to a vegan diet but certainly not my only one. Back on the Bike: Reawakening the Cyclist Within
On Tuesday morning, the last day of June 2010, I met a new woman at the 5:45am cycling class: myself! A new woman with the stamina, perseverance, strength and power that I would not have otherwise believed existed in me were it not for the image in the mirror staring back at me.
This was my 5th indoor spinning (cycling) class in 2 weeks and the seemingly impossible task of surviving a 60-minute basic spinning class was now softened by ounces of progress and heaps of determination. The impossible had withdrawn again, making room for new discoveries.
Yes, I used to consider myself in decent shape, what with all my power yoga and all the stairs in my house and well, you burn calories when you tango and go for a walk, you know!
Ha!!! Wishful thinking! [Read more…] about Back on the Bike: Reawakening the Cyclist Within
Recipes for Happiness: Cookbooks Exclusively Made for Trader Joe’s
My first encounter with Trader Joe’s was through a beautiful care package sent years ago from Northern California by a dear friend. I do not remember any of the goodies she sent me except one: The Comodyne Oat Towels, the best make-up remover on planet earth! Soon after, I started my frequent business trips to San Jose and going back to Trader Joe’s to pick up more of my Oat Towels was a mere necessity. What would have been a simple errand run on my first stop in this store turned into a memorable experience. The place instantly filled me with a sense of comfort, curiosity and community. A grocery store like no other, Trader Joe’s is even easier to love and enjoy with this one brilliant idea: A cookbook and shopping handbook designed specifically for it. Liquid Meditation: Making the Perfect Cup of Tea
Discovering Oolong tea for me was an accident. A life changing one. One day 3 years ago, my husband fancied the tea shop’s Oolong titled “Iron Goddess of Mercy” and bought 2 ounces for fun. We both tried it and liked it fine. Then a few months later, I happened to give up espresso in my ultimate quest to go healthy! (Well, I still drink the occasional espresso) But I was not about to give up caffeine (who knows! That may be another quest at the yoga teacher training someday!). But the ideal replacement seemed obvious: Loose-leaf Oolong tea. Then I discovered the taste and equally delightful benefits of raw honey, (thanks to Natalia Rose and her Raw Detox Diet) combined with Iron Goddess of Mercy Oolong, I must say: one taste and you are hooked for life! Wholesome Eating: A Fall Vegan Soup Recipe
One of the best things that can happen to us in life is discovering a passion, or watching someone close to us discover theirs. In this case, it is my husband who made the discovery, and I his spectator. This was not a thundering bolt of a discovery full of drama and a change of lifestyle overnight. That’s the stuff of novels and movies. His was a quiet, leisurely and slowly yet steadily growing passion. The object of desire: Cooking. He is surprisingly talented in the kitchen too. His methodical approach, well-refined with precision, attention and creativity, are the ultimate recipe of success! And yes, the pun is well-intended and brings me to the topic of this post: A vegan fall soup recipe to your health and well-being. [Read more…] about Wholesome Eating: A Fall Vegan Soup Recipe
