What do you wish you knew when you were younger?

Self-reflection of the soul

A dear blogger friend asked me to write my thoughts about this in a post and at first I thought, thanks but I’ll get to it when I can.

Then I started reading the collection of bittersweet thoughts and sentiments from a few brave souls who took on this seemingly subtle but intense challenge and a burst of inspiration showed up, unannounced, uninvited and unexpected and not taking no for an answer.

It shoved my other priorities aside to make room for the urge to write from the heart.

Oh how stubborn and selfish the heart can be, how unreasonable on an idle Tuesday afternoon, and in this case, how ironic, dropping all else to take a trip down memory lane to recount its own silly mistakes, its near regrets, its long wishes, and its sincere apologies to the self.

Alas, I have learned to follow this stubborn, unreasonable, selfish heart to the end of the world and back so there’s no refusing it this small request now. But panic not, my dear readers!

I will guard the flow of thoughts, keep my promised attempt at brevity in this post and rest assured I shall not be getting naked on my blog or delve into too much transparency but what needs to be said shall be said.

In Search of Lost and Forgotten Memories

How is it that some of us so clearly remember memories from the earliest years of life on this earth while the rest of us struggle in vain to find a shred of anything that would awaken those sleeping beauties and bring them to the surface to let us to rejoice in?

I have been aching to remember my childhood in more depth and detail. Why the yearning and why now, I wish I knew. All I know is that I “rank at the bottom of the class” while my girlfriends remember vivid details of our days in Iran. A Los Angeles reunion after 26 years proved this and for the life of me, I cannot shake it off. Whatever happened to my beautiful memories?

“How can you not remember this incident or that person?“

Believe me, it’s not for lack of trying or desire. Or being a forgetful person in any way shape or form.

A 31 Day Yoga and Meditation Challenge

Yesterday, I marked the end of my 31 day yoga and meditation challenge. For the entire month of May, I committed to a minimum of an hour of daily yoga practice and a few minutes of daily meditation. Like most great ideas born of small stuff, this one started from a casual question; I shared my 10 Day Yoga Challenge from last year, wondering who may want to join me for a second round and seriously expecting no one to respond in kind. The day that I stop improving upon the self is the day that I stop living.

My problem has never been the lack of motivation in improving myself. I find myself drawn to self-improvement as bees to flowers or water to shore. No, my problem is bigger. It is the ever-present overwhelming feeling of just how in this world and life am I going to sufficiently improve upon myself. It is an obsession with self-improvement in more ways than I can possibly make time and effort to pursue.
