A Fable: The Little Girl, A Misguided Dream, and A Little Birdie
Once upon a time there lived a little girl. And she wanted nothing more than making her parents proud and being a “success” by the ways of the world.
But she didn’t know how, so she asked her elders what to do and they all said the same thing and said it often too: “Work hard! Work very very hard and you shall succeed!” So there, she had her answer. The key to success was working very hard then. She was very relieved about knowing this.
In this manner she grew up to be very hard-working. Her elders seemed very proud of her, which mattered a lot even to the not-so-little woman she had become.
It wasn’t always easy for her though. When she was too tired to work, when her body was exhausted and her mind craved something – anything – other than work, and her heart yearned for creativity and fulfillment, she ignored them all and kept working.
She also battled a lot of doubts about this path to success, but she never questioned it for real.
When she arrived at her corporate job, she knew just how to succeed: by working hard ofcourse, very hard, harder than anyone at the company and longer than anyone could withstand.
Thus passed the years of her corporate career at a company she used to adore, and trust, and love and believe in. “As long as I work hard, they will reward me!”, she thought.
But a funny thing began to happen on the path to “success”: absolutely nothing.
Nothing at all. She got ignored. And overlooked. And abandoned.
Doors closed rather than opened, and opportunities went to others, not to her. A promotion, a raise, a recognition – advancement in her career – those were what she had worked so hard for but a (fake) pat on the back is what she got.
“Why“, she wondered, “I’ve worked so very hard!”
And when she realized how her mediocre peers had surpassed her, she cried: “This is not fair!” So she got very mad, then very sad and finally became disillusioned.
A few depressing years went by in this manner at her job until a little birdie woke her up from her fantasy one day and told her the truth, the real bloody truth this time:
“You little darling, you’ve been led astray, haven’t you? You poor little soul! They who told you to work very hard forgot to tell you the real secret to success at work. They either didn’t know any better or were too proud to admit it.”
“It takes a whole lot more to be a success in the corporate world besides just working hard, baby. In fact, working hard alone is the stupidest dumbest silliest most ridiculous strategy for advancing in any corporate job that I’ve ever heard.”
And then the little birdie started quacking some awful obscenities but thankfully, soon took control of his own senses. This whole “work hard and you will get ahead” concept drove him absolutely over the edge.
Then came the juicy wisdom about making it at corporate.
“Now listen up!”, the little birdie went on addressing the shocked woman that the little girl had now become. “I am going to tell you everything – and I mean everything – you need to know to make your hard work pay, literally and figuratively.”
“I am going to tell you the secrets to success in the corporate landscape. I am going to tell you all the stupid mistakes you made so you don’t ever make them again. I am going to show you how to talk to that boss of yours so he says yes to everything you want, and how to do it without coming across as pushy or demanding. I am going to tell you how to run your own public relations campaign so well that your upper management will not only suddenly notice you, they fall in love with you.”
“I am going to show you how to work less – yes, far far far less, and how to say no to all the stuff that doesn’t matter at all and how to do only what matters and no more. I am going to teach you how to get your own mentor, build your company allies and even get yourself a Godfather that rallies for you behind closed door meetings and stands up for you when naysayers get in the way of your advancement.”
“And I am going to show you just how to get all the promotions and the money (plus love and respect) that you deserve from your company to make this corporate career dream happen. Are you ready to hear it, sweet thing?”
The woman stood up tall, dried her tears, took a deep breath, felt her confidence rise for the first time in years.
Then she smiled and said, “Little birdie, I am ready. Tell me everything!”
The end of the fable, the beginning of leapfrogging to success for the woman, and the start of your amazing career success.
