It used to annoy me to no end when people would tell me to have a better attitude. They offered this advice as though it were as simple as flipping a switch. They made it sound like it was something entirely in my control and all I had to do to be happy is to flip that switch on. “Go ahead and just change your attitude, sweet heart, and the world will smile at you and the sun will shine brightly and you will feel so much better.” It was as though they were intimately familiar with the source of all my woes to be able to so precisely predict its timely disappearance.
