The most wonderful relationships can run their course; the greatest love affairs can go sour; the sweetest friendships can meet a bitter end and even the most invincible people may leave each other through death or divorce but I never saw a day that I would fall out of love with a company that was my pride and joy, my identity, my definition of productivity, and my one true measure of success.

They say people don’t leave companies; they leave managers.
Oh really? I specifically did not want to leave because I was blessed with wonderful managers.

I precisely left the company, the institution and the entity; I left what it had all come to represent, in exchange for its initial greatness. I left because I could no longer watch how far it had fallen from integrity and a sense of duty to what it used to consider its greatest asset – and what continues to be that asset, even as they turn a blind eye to it – the employees, the people, the soul and the heartbeat of the workplace. In 2006, I read an article by Steve Pavlina on becoming an early riser. I was instantly enthralled. That happens to me a lot, by the way. Green juicing is another example but the early rising story is much better.

Now I know it is easy to be enthralled with ideas when you are not able to even begin to imagine what it takes to accomplish them.

And enthralled I was.

What Guilty Feeling?

The guilty feeling is the uneasy, unsettling, not-good-enough feeling at the pit of our stomach when we fall short of delivering on all the promises that we made to ourselves — never mind that we made far too many unrealistic ones to begin with.

Guilt, the type which follows no crime, no offense, no misdeed and no wrongdoing – unlike Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment — and yet it survives with disturbingly large influence in many of us. Guilt, the kind that serves no purpose and has no good reason to exist. Guilt, the heavy burden we choose to carry about things we thought we would and should do at a particular instant in time but we fell short instead. Never mind how much we accomplished instead.

Give Practice some Glory

Practice deserves a lot more glory around here, frankly. It is far too often the unpopular accompaniment to success and stardom. It is the unworthy servant next to Gods of fame and fortune. Practice hardly makes cocktail conversation, much less a serious topic of every day discussion and attention.
